Leaders Award
What is the WGL Award?
The course is designed to prepare potential leaders for leading
groups of any age in remote NON-MOUNTAINOUS areas of the UK
(e.g. Dartmoor) in summer conditions.
IT IS NOT AN INTRODUCTION TO WALKING FOR BEGINNERS, OR SIMPLY
A PERSONAL SKILLS TRAINING COURSE.
Before you apply to attend a training course, make sure you
can answer yes to the following questions:
1. Are you at least 18 years old?
2. Do you have a genuine interest in leading groups?
3. Have you completed at least 20 hill walks?
WGL Course Format
All MTLE courses follow the same format: 1) registration for
the award and fulfillment of pre-requirements 2) undertake
a training course (or you can apply to MLTE for exemption
from training) 3) gain suitable personal and group leadership
experience 4) attend an assessment course 5) continue to gain
personal and group experience.
At training you will learn such skills as group management
and leadership, navigation, emergency procedures and equipment,
access and conservation and non-remote campsite management.
At assessment you will be asked to demonstrate both the skills
leaned on training and from personal experience, plus have
a valid 1st aid award and a fully completed log book.
Mountain Activities generally runs WGL training courses are
run over three consecutive days or a series of afternoons/evenings
then a weekend away.
Mountain Activities generally runs assessment courses over
one day in the South East followed by a separate weekend away,
or in a 3 day block.
WGL Training
Requirements: You must register with Mountain
Leader Training England (MLTE), or one of the other UK mountain
training boards. This is the new name for the Mountain Leader
Training Board (MLTB), but the courses remain unchanged. You

requirements for attending (above), you will need to be self-sufficient
for personal hill walking equipment, e.g. walking boots &
waterproofs etc.
Other Information: Some specialist equipment is provided;
certain items are available for loan if required.
Note: As this is a new award, in order to
avoid duplication of training, those who have completed Mountain
Leader Training can go straight to WGL assessment, provided
they register for the WGL award and fulfill the assessment
pre-requirements. Contact MLTE for details.
WGL Assessment
Requirements: Completion of a training course
(or exemption from training, or ML training), acceptable 1st
aid award, completion of logbook requirements.
Other Information: Candidates are expected
to be self sufficient for all equipment, including a tent
as one night is likely to be spent in a campsite. A home written
test paper must be completed before attending.
